Why TV reporters in Indonesia wear uniform?

November 22, 2006 · 5 Comments

It was a very interesting question from an award winning journalist, lecturer Chay Hofilena of the Philippines as she gave lecture at the Workshop on the Investigative Reporting for TV Journalist held by Trans TV and another sponsor.  I did n’t participate the workshop but I talked to her on Tuesday as she is my lecturer in the Philippines and also my friend.

“Why TV reporters should wear uniform?” asked she.

“Well, for me, the only reason is that they want to be easily identified because ID card might be not good enough,” I replied.

I told her that it was Metro TV which started doing it several years ago as the TV station is owned by Surya Paloh, who earlier obliged his newspaper reporters Media Indonesia to wear such a uniform.

But now, all TV stations copied the trend.

“I didn’t see such a trend in the Philippines,” I said.

“Exactly,” she said.”Journalists should be free to express themselves just like when they are reporting and writing.”

“I agree. But what’s the participating reporters of your workshop say about this,” I asked her.

“They say the uniform is for security reason when they enter their office it would be easy to identify. ID card could be imitated, therefore they need uniform,” she said.

“Others say that they have no choice but to do it, otherwise they get fired if they refuse to wear.”

She also raised a possibility that such a uniform might be a sign of equality as she saw the Trans TV boss Ishadi was wearing the uniform.

However, a journalist whom I and Chay met, gave a more negative tone over the TV reporters uniform.

“The quality of TV reportage is poor in Indonesia as we don’t have good school of journalism.  They are not confident with their reporters therefore they need uniform to identify themselves. With that uniform, sources will easily identity what institution that interview them,” he said.

Chay replied:” May be the uniform is good too because TV reporters do not have to buy cosmetics to make up and clothes..”.

I just laughed when she gave the last joke.

It was an interesting talk :)

Jakarta was so hot last week

November 19, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Very hot. That was the weather in Jakarta last week. It seemed that I got headache due to the hot weather, and my stamina dropped. Today, it is again so hot in Jakarta with my face skin being irritated.

I was not sure what happened recently in Jakarta, but November should be the beginnning of rainy season. The season had not come yet, although there were rains prior to the extreme hot weather.

SBY and Bush

November 19, 2006 · Leave a Comment

Great!!! after Howard of Australia in Batam, Blair of England earlier this year, now Bush of the U.S. tomorrow. Congratulation.

Simply,  my point is that not many Indonesian Presidents got the visit from the Presidents of three countries that are considered very powerful in this world.

SBY did it, and he deserves it I think for being a good friend of those countries.

Protests against Bush are, I think, trivial compared to the success to bring Bush in Bogor.  For Bush, such demonstrations are just common, they happen everywhere.

Perhaps better not to eat the American foods during the visit is better because it saves our money and make the American vendors did not get good sales. :)

Just share my experience in Batangas, Philippines to you Jakartans.  Satrio Hermanto, with his car, was weighed in on Saturday after winning second place in Batangas to secure the championship of AF3 promotion class.  His total point of 233 could not be surpassed by second placed Gaby Dela Merced of the Philippines, who just collected 149 points.  On Sunday there would be two more races.

Police raids

November 3, 2006 · Leave a Comment

After Idul Fitri, the Police started conducting many raids in Jakarta particularly at night. At least i found them doing the raids in Depok and Kemang recently when I returned home from my office. Perhaps the police just checked the identify of the new people from other provinces who usually migrate to Jakarta after the Idul Fitry holidays.

So prepare your identity card and driving licences otherwise you will get trouble with the police. But there are always tricks to escape from the raids :)
